CYCLE to work day is the UK's biggest cycling commuting event which is taking place on Thursday 5th August.

In preporation for the event here are some of the best cycle routes in South Lakeland according to pedlenorth.com and everything you need to know about them.

1- Derwentwater and Borrowdale (10.2 miles) - This route is considered easy so it is perfect for anyone who isnt an avid cyclist but who is wanted to start. The route starts in Keswick and the route gets steep as you enter the valley, the route sweeps through the valleys allowing breathtaking views across of barrowdale and the lake. It is a short days ride and would be perfect fun for the family. 

This route is littered with refreshment points, which gives you the chance to take a little break before you start off back out onto the route.

2 - Windermere Loop (38.5 miles) - This route is medium difficulty and is a great route for anyone who wants to start riding on local roads in Lakeland. This route takes you around Lake Windermere taking in the local sights. Like the other route there is plenty of places to rest and have a cuppa, perhaps get some fish and chips.

3 - The Struggle (38 miles) - Clue is in the name that this route is hard, with its 38 miles and 4000 feet of ascent. This route covers a vast amount of the lakes but as with the other routes it in a perfect opportunity to take in some of the breathtaking views Cumbria has to offer. The route passes through ambeside, Patterdale and Glenridding, ending just after Dove cottage which takes you back to the start of the route. 

The Westmorland Gazette: 4 - Tarn Hows (11 Miles) - This is an ideal route for any time of the day and is perfect as a challenging ride for the family. With steep climbs and descents on country lanes this is a great short route to get you started. The route goes past Drucken Duck pub so you can grab a bite to eat or you can travel to not to far away Ambleside and stay for the day.

5 - Lakeland and Loop west (65 miles) - Finally, the longest route covering 65 miles and 7400 feet of ascent. The Lakeland and loop west route is a tour de france style setting which showcases the western half of lakeland, it has spectacular scenary and allows a peak into some of cumbrias less explored locations. There is a cafe at the halfway point to rest those legs or further up the route you can rest in Grasmere and Keswick.
