Cumbria's first CBD cafe has opened its doors.

The aim at West Lakes Hemp is to debunk some of the misconceptions around CBD and educate people on the topic.

CBD is a food supplement that contains the legal substance of cannabidiol and has also been proven not to be psychoactive. Several studies have shown that CBD can relieve physical pain and help combat mental health issues.

The Westmorland Gazette:

Co-founder of West Lakes Hemp, Nic Hewitt, said: "We have been around now since March 2018 and we originally had an office in Carlisle operating from there.

"Since Covid, we started operating online only; we always wanted a shop but with the economic climate we weren't sure what would happen.

"We came and had a look because what we aim to do is make our own products and the building we’ve got is a cafe with an industrial kitchen."

West Lakes Hemp has teamed up with Emma Bakes, who is producing CBD cakes, sandwiches and treats. The cafe also sells CBD-infused drinks like tea and coffee too.

The Westmorland Gazette:

Nic Hewitt doesn't want West Lakes Hemp to just be a shop; she wants it to be a community.

The business has a private consultation room where people can go for advice on CBD and products.

Nic said: "Our whole company is built on honesty as there is a lot of stigma around cannabis and the use around it.

"The space we have is a large shop and the aim of the game is to let local communities use it and we're looking into getting a licence to host comedy nights and music events.

"We want to be a community hub."

All products in West Lakes Hemp are tested in labs to make sure they are safe and ready to be sold to the public.
