TWO south Cumbrian MPs have urged people to get their Covid vaccination after data revealed South Lakeland has had no reported coronavirus deaths in the past week.

The number of coronavirus cases in South Lakeland increased by 28 in the last 24 hours, official figures show.

A total of 6,533 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in South Lakeland when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on August 4 (Wednesday), up from 6,505 on Tuesday.

The rate of infection in South Lakeland now stands at 6,217 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 9,237.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 28,936 over the period, to 5,952,756.

But, despite dozens of new cases, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in South Lakeland.

The dashboard shows 223 people had died in the area by August 4 – which was unchanged from Tuesday.

It means there have been no deaths in the past week, which is a decrease on one the previous week.

“It’s really really good news,” said Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron.

“I think what it tells us is that the vaccine works.

“The number one message is continue to be respectful to each other, I personally will wear a mask in indoor spaces because I think it’s a polite thing to do and it’s an unpleasant thing to get and people are still dying from it.

“But the fundamental thing is it should give us real cautious hope that we are now moving out of the worst of it.

“What I would say to everybody out there is go and get the vaccine if you haven’t had it yet and are able to.”

MP for Barrow and Furness, Simon Fell, echoed Mr Farron’s calls and urged people to get vaccinated.

“This is very encouraging and it shows that the shield provided by the vaccines is holding up and working,” he said.

“I’d urge anyone still waiting for their second dose, or who has yet to book, to do so in order to ensure that we continue on this path.”

So far in South Lakeland 80,540 people had been given a first dose by the end of August 3.

And 70,343 people had been given a second dose by the end of the same day.
