PRIMARY school children made pledges to reduce their carbon footprint recently as they took part in a national environmental campaign in the run up to the COP 26 conference.

St. Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary school in Windermere welcomed a banner from Catholic Agency for Overseas Development’s (CAFOD) to mark the UN Climate change conference in Glasgow next month.

The Eyes of the World campaign saw the banner travel from Cornwall to Glasgow and the children posed with the catching green sign by Windermere when it visited the town recently.

The next stop for the banner after Windermere was Blackpool Tower and it will be in Glasgow for the duration of the COP 26 conference, which takes place between October 31 and November 12.

Teachers at the school used the campaign to start a conversation with pupils about their impact on the environment and discussed ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

Pledges from the children included spending more time outside, using bikes and scooters more to get to school and ensuring lights are switched off when not in use.

“We have been discussing climate change in school and ways to reduce our carbon footprint,” said headteacher Lucy Bone.

“The children also made pledges. In their pledges they have decided on ways of help save the planet.

“Some children would like to use their bikes and scooters more, rather than drive. Others want to spend less time on their computers and more time outside.

“As a school we are making sure lights and computers are turned off when not in use. Like the children say – it’s the little changes that have the biggest impact.

“All the children came up with amazing ideas to do their little bit to help save the planet.”
