THE number of coronavirus cases in South Lakeland increased by 239 over the weekend, official figures show.

Since the beginning of the pandemic 9,930 people tested positive for Covid-19 in South Lakeland when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on October 11 (Monday), up from 9,691 on Friday.

The rate of infection in South Lakeland now stands at 9,466 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 12,322.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 112,469 over the period, to 8,193,769.

However, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded over the weekend in South Lakeland.

227 people had died in the area as of October 11. 

No deaths have occurred in the past week, which is the same as the previous week.

They were among 19,443 deaths recorded across the North West.

The latest figures show 79,165 people had received both jabs by October 10 (Sunday) – 80% of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 78% of people aged 12 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
