A FIRE station issue safety tips to home owners after they attended two incidents involving candles in the last 48 hours.

As part of National Candle Fire Safety Week, Barrow Fire Station issued six safety tips to home owners after Cumbria Fire and Rescue service attended two incident involving candles in the last 48 hours.

An incident involving a candle last night in Barrow was said to have been ‘a lot worse’ if not immediately noticed. The property had hard wired smoke alarms which activated immediately alerting all residents within the building.

The six candle Safety tips include: Positioning your candle on a suitable surface and away from the reach of children and pets, ensuring the candle is away from combustible materials, such as curtains, sofas and other soft furnishings and textiles, ensuring the candle is away from drafts and air currents, never moving a candle once lit, always making sure a candle is fully extinguished before leaving the house or going to bed and ensuring you have working smoke alarms within your property.

Fire and Rescue Services attend 100’s of fires each year caused by the unsafe use of candles, with too many resulting in injury and loss of life.
