A KENDAL charity has launched an appeal for volunteers to help with essential support work with unpaid Carers.

Carer Support South Lakes has described volunteers as 'the backbone' of its support services.

The charity helps people of all ages to look after loved ones.

Nicky Woods, the charity’s volunteer coordinator, said: “Many of our volunteers are ex-Carers themselves so they know the real struggles and pressures involved and what it means to care for a loved one full time.

“Some have benefitted from the work of volunteers themselves. So, they now want to give something back.”

Stuart Graves volunteered to help run the charity’s Male Carers Group two years ago.

Stuart said: “There’s nothing better for the guys than to have a chat, exchange stories and have a laugh just for a couple of hours – a sort of respite from their caring responsibilities.

"It’s a great privilege to be part of the group.”

Carer Support South Lakes says it works with people’s availability and any spare time that they might have.

The charity has many volunteering opportunities including the Sitting Service – where volunteers sit with the Cared For allowing their Carer to have a respite break.

They also searching for volunteers for a new Telephone Support Service, Support Group leaders, Admin Support, Young Carer Support and more.

One Carer said: “It has given me ‘me time’ for 3 hours once a month. I can relax knowing my wife has someone with her and is safe back at home”.

One current volunteer says: “You only have to see the face of the Carer to realise that their time away, doing something different, has done them good.

"It obviously gives Carers a much-needed break which, for once, doesn’t cost them anything. It’s gratifying to know you are helping people."
