This winter, Lake District hill experts, Karen and Dan Parker will release Peak Bagging: Wainwrights, a comprehensive guide to all 214 Wainwrights.

According to publishers Vertebrate Publishing, the book is one of the first to offer logical itineraries for easy completion of all the Wainwrights.

More than fifty years ago, Alfred Wainwright, renowned British hillwalker, and guidebook author, set out to describe 214 peaks in the Lake District in his seven-volume illustrated Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells and bagging all the Wainwrights has become a popular challenge for runners and hillwalkers.

Karen and Dan said: “We are very pleased to have been given the chance to share our love and knowledge of the Lakeland Fells with others, and hopefully to provide help in bagging all the Wainwrights in an enjoyable and organised manner.

“Some people question the list-ticking approach to mountains, but we feel it is an ideal way to appreciate the Lake District, giving the opportunity to visit not only the well-known high fells but also the quieter lower fells that are often overlooked.”

The pair are based in the Lowther Valley, near Penrith and have been regularly walking and running in the Lake District for the past thirty years.

Karen is the current British age-group champion and a former international orienteer, and in his twenties and thirties Dan has run the elite class in many mountain marathons, winning the LAMM elite course in 1996.

They have also created mountain marathons and played a part in creating the most efficient Wainwright routes which Steve Birkinshaw used to great effect in 2014 when he broke Joss Naylor’s long-standing record, completing the challenge in six days and thirteen hours.
