TWO Kendal men accused of taking part in a violent and sexual assault on a man in the town have entered not guilty pleas to an amended charge sheet.

Christopher Calvert, 44, and 35-year-old John Calvert appeared at Carlisle Crown Court on Friday.

During a short hearing in front of Judge Simon Medland QC, the pair were arraigned on three charges.

Both pleaded not guilty to alleged false imprisonment of the man; to an alleged sexual assault involving the use of a paint roller; and also to an alleged assault which is said to have caused actual bodily harm.

The latter charge replaced an allegation that Calvert and Calvert unlawfully and maliciously caused the man grievous bodily harm with intent to do so.

A 17-year-old male who appeared in the dock with the pair during Friday’s hearing pleaded not guilty to the sexual assault allegation.

The charges date back to 2nd June this year. A Cumbria police spokesman confirmed in the aftermath officers were called at 3-25pm on that date to Sandes Avenue after a man was found with serious injuries in the street. This was reported to have been in the vicinity of the Sports Direct store.

The man was taken by air ambulance to hospital in Preston where he was said, at the time, to be in a “serious but stable” condition.

Detectives appealed for any members of the public with information to get in touch.

Christopher Calvert, of Burneside Road, and John Calvert, of Stricklandgate, both Kendal; along with the youth, are now due to stand trial in front of a jury.

This is due to start on January 14, 2022, with a five to seven-day time estimate.

In the meantime, Christopher Calvert and John Calvert have been remanded in custody by Judge Medland, who granted bail to their teenage co-defendant. The teen cannot be identified because of his age.
