SANTA will no longer take to Kendal's streets due to 'multiple factors', it has been announced.

The procession of St. Nick through the town, organised by Kendal and District Lions Club, has raised more than £150,000 over a 40-year period.

A spokesman for the club said the money had 'enabled us to support many individuals and groups'.

However, he said the club had decided 'with sadness' that the annual fundraiser was 'no longer viable'.

Among the reasons highlighted was the increasing size of the town making it impossible to visit all areas and a lack of club members to accompany Santa on his rounds.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us every year," said the spokesman.

He said Santa would still be seen at static sites in the town over the festive season - on December 12 and 19 at Morrisons - in the morning - and Asda in the afternoon.
