Kendal’s Indoor Market is looking to the future as footfall continues to grow and stall holders prepare for a bumper Christmas.

Delivery and Commercial Officer Glyn Harmer said since reopening in April trade has built-up to almost pre-pandemic levels and traders said customers were more eager than ever to shop local.

The market, situated in the Westmorland Shopping Centre, is fully dressed for Christmas and residents can expect an abundance of Christmas goods and gift ideas.

“It’s almost back to pre-pandemic levels,” said Mr Harmer.

“We’re waiting for that Christmas push.”

This year, the indoor market will open for the first three Sundays in December to allow customers an extra opportunity to shop and, as Christmas day falls on a Saturday this year, the town’s historic outdoor market is combining with the Kendal Farmers Market to hold a Christmas Eve market-the last time this happened was in 2010.

A new sound system has been installed and the market has seen new tables and signage, to let customers know where it is.

Jarre Davison who runs JD Pets said she was ‘feeling positive’ ahead of the festive season.

“It’s been great since we opened,” she said.

“There’s been lots of local support and it’s going really well.

“Footfall’s gone up and more people are jumping on board supporting local business.”

Vicky Shorrocks, who runs The Sweet Shop, has expanded and is also selling Christmas decorations and gifts.

During the market’s closure due to Covid she was able to take her business online.

“You’ve got to adapt to what’s going on,” she said.

“The market is full, there’s no gaps, and everyone has made an effort.

“It’s marvellous.

“We have a lot of local people who support us and people from across the world who return every year and know our names.

“The market is moving forward and it’s where it needs to be.”

The market has operated on its current site in the town since a public appeal raised funds to build a Market Hall in celebration of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887.
