A patient at Westmorland General Hospital’s Oncology Unit has donated more than £800 to Bay Hospitals Charity as a thank you for the care she received.

Jayne Tamang completed chemotherapy treatment in June, and decided to raise money for Bay Hospitals Charity, Macmillan Cancer Support and CancerCare.

She said: “I had such wonderful care and support from the word go when I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in October 2020.

“My experience has left me with nothing but praise for the NHS, especially as my diagnosis and treatment was during all the upheaval and challenges which covid presented. I always felt safe and my needs truly cared for.”

Jayne, who runs a massage therapy business in Windermere, decided to say thank you by raising funds along with her friend and neighbouring business owner Terezia Ionas of Lakes Beauty and Nails.

She said: “Terezia and I decided to join in with Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in September this year but to extend it over two days.

“We had a raffle with amazing prizes from local businesses, a ‘good as new’ stall, a lucky dip box, guess the number of marshmallows competition and a drawing contest for the children. We also raised £845 through a JustGiving page, donations from when I dyed my hair pink, and more money from our clients who came for treatments during the run up to the event. In total we raised £2,400 which was beyond our expectations.”

Jayne presented her donation to the Oncology Unit during a recent clinic appointment.

She said: “I had such amazing support from Dr Chan Ton and the amazing team of nurses at the Oncology Unit.

The Morecambe Bay Trust, Non-Executive Director Adrian Leather said: “I’m very pleased that Jayne had such a positive experience during her treatment at Westmorland General Hospital and grateful for this fantastic donation.

“I would also second Jayne’s excellent advice about being aware of changes in your body. Early diagnosis and treatment is an important factor in recovery from cancer, and we want people to contact their GP in the first instance if they have any concerns.”
