A SCHOOL took on a series of challenges to raise money in honour of a two-year-old boy with a rare form of cancer.

Pupils from Castle Park School in Kendal took part in a charity fundraising day to raise money for Milly’s Smiles, which has supported the family of a staff member whose son received a cancer diagnosis last summer.

The toddler has had more than 300 procedures so far and is being treated in Manchester Children's hospital and the Christie.

Children and staff took on different challenges to raise funds for the children’s charity, which provides a bag of essential items for children and their parents during their stay in hospital.

On the fundraising day, ten members of staff ran ‘100K in a Day’, with each pair running laps of 10km around school and the town’s Sandylands estate.

The runners were cheered on by the children, who had come to school in their own choice of clothes for a donation towards the charity.

Pupils also got creative to raise funds, with one pupil in year one raising £52 by holding a cake sale at their house.

Other members of staff also agreed to be placed in the stocks and the children paid 50p to throw wet sponges at them, which according to the school the children ‘thoroughly enjoyed’.

And younger children at the school brought silver coins to school to make a coin smile in the playground.

So far, Castle Park has raised more than £3000 for Milly’s Smiles, including a generous donation of £500 from a local company.
