INCLEMENT weather has affected roads and transport over the Christmas period, as forecasters say it could get worse.

Many areas at higher altitudes woke up to snow on Boxing Day morning.

Cumbria County Council's weather cameras showed heavy snow on multiple roads, including Kirkstone Pass A592, the highest altitude road in the county.

The Honister Pass was closed for most of the day between the Seathwaite turn off and the Keswick turn off.

The A66 was closed for hours in both directions, with traffic trying to find alternate routes to travel to the A1(M).

This was compounded as people travelled home from their Christmas Day plans.

Meanwhile, South Lakes Police said: "Patches of falling snow are settling on higher ground and alternative routes may be required if the snow showers persist."

And forecasters have predicted that it could get worse.

Elevations above 300m are likely to see freezing temperatures and high winds.

The Met Office high altitude weather warning says currently says that 'strong winds can result in a severe and debilitating wind chill many degrees below the actual temperature.'

It says there is a low likelihood of blizzards, thunderstorms or heavy persistent rain.
