READERS have react as an MP objected to a hotel in Barrow being used to house asylum seekers.

Simon Fell MP said he had lodged his objections to the Home Office after finding out Hotel Majestic in Duke Street was to be used as a base.

“I have lodged my objections with the Home Office about this going ahead,” said Mr Fell.

Residents took to social media to welcome the refugees and some voiced their concerns on the decision.

Christopher Wilde said: "Good luck to them, i hope that can find work up here and some choose to stay." Janet Bury said: "If it is unused and we can provide a roof over peoples heads then why not use it.

"Doesn't sound like the government consult anyone so don't think objections will do much good."

Peter Garbacz said: "Refugees are welcome should be his message from him and from him and from the council.

"By law, we are required to follow a legal process and in the meantime, they have to go somewhere. Why not a hotel that is lying empty?

"I do hope that the Home Office ensure the building is fit for purpose and follows a recommissioning process that means this is the case.

"It's not like we aren't forever moaning about buildings being empty and left to dereliction.

"At least if the refugees are all in one facility, they can be monitored and given the help they need whilst awaiting their asylum applications."

Christine Robinson said: "What about the people sleeping rough on the streets, they should come first."

Paul Scott said: "Station hotel in Perth has been used as an asylum hotel for a while now, there have been no issues to report." Rachel Murphy said: "Asylum does not equal criminal, it is somebody in need.

"They need somewhere safe to live, this is a temporary solution with an unused building.

"If these people who need help are shared around the country, then each town has a very small responsibility.

"It terrifically sad that they need to come, but I'm proud I can say we are helping them."
