A FOOTPATH has been closed as work continues on flood defences at Kendal Parish Church and Waterside Flats.

As a result of construction, part of the multi-million-pound Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme, the riverside footpath has been closed since Friday, January 14.

According to the Environment Agency the footpath will be closed for the duration of the works, likely to take until spring to complete.

A diversion is in place; however, the neighbouring play park remains open.

This is in addition to the current footpath closure between Dockray Hall and Victoria Bridge, north of the town centre.

A diversion is also in place for the closure of this section of path.

Stewart Mounsey, flood risk manager for Cumbria said: “Construction of the Flood Risk Management Scheme for Kendal has made a good start this year, with contractors Volker Stevin continuing work to build flood defence walls along the riverside boundary of Waterside Flats and Holy Trinity Church.

“Work in this location will take around eight months to complete and will involve building two flood defence walls.

“When finished, the wall will be finished in natural stone. Improvements will also be made to existing footpaths to create better access for pedestrians.”
