A CARE home in Kendal has asked for the public’s help to mark a resident’s very special milestone.

Heron Hill Care Home has appealed to the town to send in cards for Florence Trudgill who will turn 101 on Wednesday, January 26.

Kendalians have risen to the occasion and the care home has been overwhelmed by people’s generosity and, as well as cards, the home has received gifts, requests to send flowers, biscuits and has also been promised a personalised birthday cake from Asda.

“We decided to ask people to send Florence cards as is it is a special birthday and due the home being currently in outbreak we cannot have as many visitors into the home,” said manager Nicola Spedding.

“We wanted to make it more special for her.”

Florence, who joined the care home in December last year, grew up in Minehead, Somerset.

She was a member of the Girls Brigade, where her role was to complete the drills as sports instructor.

She then worked for a private solicitor’s company as a clerk before she met her husband, Douglas, during the war.

He was a sergeant in the Royal Engineers, and she did not see much of him for four years as he was posted abroad.

After the war the couple moved ‘up north’ as Douglas was originally from Lancaster.

The home has planned a party for Florence, who said the secret to a long life is to ‘be happy’, where there will be balloons, banners, tiaras and sashes.

And Ms Spedding has promised there will be plenty of prosecco and cake.

If you would like to send Florence a card it should be addressed to Florence, Heron Hill Care Home, Esthwaite Avenue, Kendal, LA9 7SE.
