CUMBRIAN MPs are united in their ‘horror’ following Russian’s invasion of Ukraine.

Barrow MP Simon Fell and South Lakes MP Tim Farron have spoken out against the ‘unprovoked’ attack led by Russia on its neighbouring Ukraine.

Russian forces launched an assault on Ukraine, crossing its borders and bombing military targets near big cities.

In an address to the nation Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged to support Ukraine ‘militarily’ following Russia’s invasion.

Mr Johnson said the UK was introducing a ‘massive package of economic sanctions... to collectively cease dependence on Russian oil and gas.’

He said: “We will work with them [Ukraine] – for however long it takes – to ensure that the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine is restored.

“This act of wanton and reckless aggression is an attack not just on Ukraine, it is an attack on democracy and freedom in East Europe and around the world.”

Russia’s President Putin has insisted he does not plan to occupy Ukraine, but Ukraine has branded it a ‘full-scale invasion’.

UK nationals were advised two weeks ago to leave Ukraine while commercial flights were still available. Those remaining have again been urged to leave Ukraine immediately - if they judge it is safe to do so.

Mr Fell said it was ‘crucial’ that ‘swingeing sanctions’ are opposed against President Putin.

He said: "The actions of President Putin’s Russia are an absolute travesty.

"Driven by his personal hubris a once great nation has invaded a sovereign democracy, putting the futures of over 40 million men, women and children at risk.

"Ukraine have done nothing to provoke this action. They are a democracy and a peaceful one at that.

"It is now crucial that NATO, and all friends of democracy and the rule of law, stand together and impose swingeing sanctions on President Putin, his state, and the acolytes around him.

"He must be under no illusion that this invasion is an act of folly with a painfully high price."

Mr Farron agreed the Russian President must be ‘stopped’- but argued that the Government response has been ‘weak’.

He said: "I’m horrified by what is happening.

“Ukraine has done nothing wrong and yet is being invaded by an aggressor who is a liar and a bully.

“Putin must be stopped. If he gets away with this then it is not only terrible for the people of Ukraine but it sends out an appalling message to dictators and fascists around the world.

“The Government’s response has so far been weak. We need far tougher sanctions, freezing the assets of Putin’s oligarchs here in the UK, and then expelling them.”
