A BAR owner has given a warning after an incident at his bar left him in hospital with a bleed on the brain.

Josh Macaulay, who runs Ye Olde Fleece Inn in Kendal, gave chase to a punter after he witnessed an incident in his bar.

But in a scuffle down an alleyway, he was sent head-first into a wall and knocked unconscious.

He said: "I was unconscious for two or three minutes and wasn’t breathing for some of it.

"Chris, my other half, is an anesthetist and managed to clear my airway and get me breathing again.

"I don’t really remember anything – I have a memory block until hospital."

But he has been filled in by people who saw the altercation.

He said: "I chased him down the alleyway that goes down the back of Baba Ganoush.

"I managed to catch up with him and kick the back of his foot, he tripped over and there was a bit of wrestling with the police, spitting and shouting.

"But when I tripped him up, it made me lose my footing and tripped sideways into the wall, I was running as fast as I could run - I was going quite fast."

The man was unknown to Mr Macaulay but had been recognised by one of his staff.

After the altercation in the pub, the man made off into the street.

Mr Macaulay says that he didn't want the man to get away scott-free, so gave chase, calling a nearby police officer to help.

He said: "I felt a moral duty to stand up to that kind of behaviour."

On the way, the police called for more help from colleagues and wrestled the man to the ground.

Mr Macaulay was diagnosed with an occipital fracture with a bleed on the back of his brain, as well as a broken wrist.

He said: "In A&E, I didn’t recognise any of my colleagues, or know what day or month or even who I was."

He stayed in hospital for four days but is now getting back into his normal life, albeit slowly.

The doctors have said that he has got to wait and see about long term impacts.

The injury most likely affected memory and short term recall, but he will probably make a full recovery.
