WATTSFIELD Under 16’s has claimed their first ever cup competition following their clash against Kendal United.

The young squad won a 2-1 victory in the Minor Cup Final which was played at Kendal Town Football Club.

The Under 16’s who are managed by Marcus Strong continued their good season with victory against a talented Kendal United who over the years have held the advantage against Wattsfield’s team.

Kendal United opened the scoring, before two goals in quick succession one of which coming from Matty Casson saw Wattsfield go 2-1 up.

The second half was a battle where Wattsfield played well, but Kendal United applied a lot of pressure all of which was managed by the Wattsfield defence.

Wattsfield will now be playing in the Under 18 league next season, while some of the players from both teams (Wattsfield Youth and United) have played for Kendal County’s first and reserve teams showing that the future is bright for both Kendal County and Wattsfield.

After the game Wattsfield Under 16 Manager and Vice Chairman Marcus Strong expressed his delight in his team’s victory.

He said: “The players showed huge resilience and had a never say die attitude which has been in keeping with our league campaign.

“And while we were 1-0 down, I knew the team would get back into the game.

“And like most games this season our performance was built on a strong defence which enabled us to win with good attacking play.

“It was the first time we had defeated Kendal United so we knew it would be a difficult afternoon and that proved to be the case.

“Kendal was always in the final at 2-1, but fortunately the players managed the game well to secure the win.

“It was nice to have a couple of drinks with opposing managers after the game and we had a good celebration.”
