A GROUP of children from Selside School enjoyed making pizzas, ice-cream sundaes and fruit juice mocktails during a visit to Ye Olde Fleece Inn at Kendal.

The Year Six children were invited by Chris Moss, a director of Westmorland Hospitality, which runs the Fleece, The Duke of Cumberland and The Gateway Inn in the town.

“We heard how hard the children had worked preparing for their SATS and we wanted to offer them a treat once the assessments were over,” said Chris. “It all ties in with our community ethos and wanting to inspire the next generation and support people.”

Ye Olde Fleece Inn head chef Ryan Fishley spoke to the ten-year-olds about food preparation and nutrition and then taught them how to make pizzas.

Front of house manager Josh Farrant helped the pupils to make delicious mocktails.

“They were able to choose different types of fruit juices and then garnish them with fruits such as raspberries, strawberries and passion fruit,” said Selside School headteacher June Lowther.

She said the youngsters also created ice-cream sundaes after choosing the type of wafers, flavours and toppings they wanted to use.

June added: “The children were so excited to tell all their friends about what they had been doing. It was a fabulous treat after their challenging week sitting their SAT assessments, but it was also an inspiring insight into the hospitality industry.

“I’d like to thank everyone at the Fleece for providing a fantastic day for the children. It was a real-life experience and that is something we like to do at Selside School. It is not just about learning in the classroom - it is about getting them out into the real world.”

Chris Moss said Ye Olde Fleece Inn would welcome other schools which wanted to visit. He said many community groups used the inn for meetings and events and if any others wanted to use the facility, they should email info@yeoldefleece.co.uk
