Head to the coast for a dose of adventure and fresh sea air, the nature reserves of Walney on Cumbria’s south coast make for a fantastic family day out.

Kids will love learning about the abundance of wildlife that live here, from Natterjack Toads to beautiful birds, plus there are miles of sandy beach to run free.

South Walney reserve also offers beautiful views across Morecambe Bay and is home to the only grey seal colony in Cumbria, which you can often sea frolicking on the shore.

If your little ones are looking to burn off some energy, then visit Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre which has a huge mix of outdoor activities from paddle boarding to archery and the must-visit Treetop Trek.

Treetop’s iconic high-ropes adventure is perfect for spending time out in nature whilst developing those balancing skills, with course levels to suit ages 5-years+.

If a day of playing kings and queens is more suited to your little lord or lady, then pay a visit to one of Cumbria’s breath-taking historic castles.

The impressive Muncaster Castle in Ravenglass regularly hosts fabulous family events, and their hawk and owl centre has magnificent daily flying displays where you can see falcons, owls, eagles and vultures up close.

Alternatively families can walk in the footsteps of Roman soldiers at the picturesque Birdoswald Roman Fort.

Their upcoming ‘Kids Rule’ event during half-term is a fun and interactive way for kids to learn the history of Hadrian’s Wall.

Make sure you pre-book online.

Meanwhile if the weather isn’t looking too flash, go indoors to the Lakes Aquarium which is home to one of the largest collections of UK freshwater fish.

Kids will love walking through the sparkling underwater tunnel, plus there are plenty of other fascinating creatures including otters, reptiles, piranhas and seahorses.
