IMAGINE stepping off the streets of Whitehaven and being transported to an exotic island in the Caribbean in a matter of minutes.

You can do exactly that with a day out at Rum Story, the unique family attraction that brings to life the history of Britain’s trade of rum and other exotic products through fascinating tales of piracy, slavery and smuggling.

The immersive sensory adventure is engaging for all ages and begins in a tropical rainforest setting where you will be flooded with the sights, sounds and smells of the Caribbean.

Be entertained with tales of ‘Blackbeard’ and piracy on the high seas, before moving through more sombre stories of the horrors of slavery and the cruel transportation of slaves to Antiguan sugar plantations, along with the American prohibition.

Rum Story provides a truly authentic experience for visitors, set in the original 18th century cellars and bonded warehouses of the renowned Jefferson family.

Step back in time to 1785 as you learn about the Jeffersons key involvement in Britain’s rum trade, that took place right here in the busy port of Whitehaven.

Walk through the original Jefferson family offices that remain virtually untouched since Victorian times, see the infamous ‘punch houses’, wander through the Jazz Age, and learn lessons on the rum making process.

The all-weather attraction is a great day out for the whole family, using full sensory engagement to recreate the essence of time and place and depict a significant period in Whitehaven’s rich history.

Once you have finished learning all about the dark spirit of Whitehaven, be sure to head to the Jefferson’s gift shop where you can pick up some world-famous 1785 Jefferson’s Rum or delicious rum butter.

There are plenty of artisan gifts and local Cumbrian produce to browse, along with a dog-friendly courtyard where you can get a hot or cold drink and traybake or biscuits.

Rum Story is located on Lowther Street, Whitehaven and is open 7 days per week from 10am – 4pm between July – September.
