A planning application has been submitted to install a movable floating jetty on the shore of Windermere.

South Windermere Sailing Club, based at YMCA Lakeside North, Newby Bridge has submitted the plans to the Lake District National Park Authority, which would involve a solid timber structure attached to a modular jetty, as the applicant explains in the Construction Method Statement:

"Given the nature of the application (a floating jetty) we believe that the proposals will not be affected by or have any influence upon the rising and falling water levels within Lake Windermere.

"For the most part, the movable floating jetty is an off the shelf modular solution.

"There are, however, elements of the installation which will be bespoke to this application.

"At the shore end of the jetty, the proposal is to construct a timber (boardwalk) link from the shore to the floating pontoon element of the jetty.

"This timber element will allow access from the dry shore to the floating pontoon element of the jetty.

"The timber element will be anchored at the shore end.

"Where the timber element interfaces with the floating pontoon, a rope pivot will connect the two.

"This will allow for the rise and fall of the water levels within the lake, while still allowing access.

"At the far end (lake end) of the jetty, we are proposing that two vertical posts will pass through two guide rings (attached to the pontoon), then down to the lake bed where they will be fixed to weighted bases.

"This base will sit on the lakebed and provide lateral stability to the lake end of the jetty.

"This approach will restrain the end of the jetty and ensure that it remains in place during high winds and throughout the range of water levels experienced on lake Windermere."
