Time is running out to get tickets for David Gray’s outdoor concert at Cartmel Racecourse next week.

The chart-topping singer-songwriter brings his White Ladder 20th anniversary tour to south Cumbria on June 24.

It is nearly a year to the day since he was originally meant to perform before it was postponed and he says he cannot wait to finally play.

“It’s happening now, and it feels extra special that it is,” said Gray,

“I’ve not played a racecourse before; this will be a first. People come to the races with one thing in mind and that’s to have a good time.

“Cartmel is beautiful. I went there a couple of times as a child; I've not been since then. Being brought up in Manchester we used to go up to the Lakes.

“All these shows have a frisson about them. Just getting the chance to play feels like a big deal after all this.

“Outdoor settings are always a little bit different. You're never quite sure what is going to happen.”

The gig gives fans between Manchester and Scotland the chance to see him play the White Ladder album in full for the first time with technology now allowing all the music to be performed live.

Originally released in 1998, the album took off after its re-release two years later and has since sold seven million copies worldwide with hits for the singles This Year's Love, Sail Away and Babylon.

The concert takes place after a full afternoon of National Hunt jump racing with the first race at 1.55pm.

Geraldine McKay, director of racing at Cartmel, said all tickets remained valid for the day.

“It’s such a privilege to welcome such a prestigious performer as David to Cartmel. It’s taken a while but he’s finally on his way," she said.

“He’s scheduled just after our final race so don’t leave, say and enjoy an evening of live music. It’s Friday night and you’re going nowhere.”

The race card for June 24 has seven races at 1.55pm; 2.30pm; 3.05pm; 3.40pm; 4:15pm; 4:47pm; and 5.20pm.
