THE PUBLIC should be mindful of people pretending to be homeless in Kendal town centre, police have said.

South Lakes Police have been actively investigating people begging this week under the Vagrancy Act of 1824, where it is an offence to sleep rough or beg in England and Wales, and appealed to the public on social media on Wednesday:

"Often is the case that persons are not homeless and are earning significant amounts of cash begging.

"Please consider who you are giving money to and where appropriate officers will direct persons to appropriate support services including the local council for homelessness.

"If you wish to report persons begging you can do this online via our live chat function or call 101."
