(ABOVE) A close up section of the Birdcage at the top of Finkle Street.
This was the site of The Pump Inn (demolished 1878) and the fish market in the late eighteen hundreds, after which an ornate gas street light with signage for Appleby, Shap and the Railway Station was erected.
Prior to Sandes Avenue opening in 1887, Finkle Street was the main road to the north out of Kendal.
