CALLS have been made to catch the culprits responsible for a bout of vandalism in Ulverston.

An appeal to find the vandals behind damage caused to a number of hanging basket displays in Ulverston has been launched.

Ulverston Town Councillor Mark Wilson is urging those responsible for the vandalism to come forward and fix the damage which occurred on New Market Street.

The vandalism comes weeks after it was announced that Ulverston Business Improvement Development (BID) is one of the finalists in this year's Britain in Bloom.

Britain in Bloom is an annual gardening competition run by The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is aimed at building communities and tackling local issues together.

The event returned after two years with 46 community gardening groups including Ulverston BID looking to impress the judges.

The finalists will be judged according to environmental criteria that consider sustainability issues and implement plant-friendly gardening techniques.

Britain in Bloom judges will visit each of the finalists in summer with the winners of each category announced at an awards ceremony in the autumn.

Cllr Wilson said the town was united in keeping the town centre bright and described the sight of vandalism as ‘unwanted’.

He said: “We are seeking the people who caused damage to the excellent hanging basket displays to come forward and fix the damage .

“In Ulverston folk are united in keeping a bright town centre to lift the spirits of townsfolk and visitors.

“The sight of vandalism on a Sunday morning is unwanted.

“I popped into Ulverston to pick up any litter from the night before and found that damage had been done.

“Ulverston in Bloom, the BID and countless volunteers are involved in our quest.

“If it was you, or you know who pulled the baskets down get in touch with police on 101 or drop a note off at town council offices.

“We shall be looking through the CCTV images very shortly.”
