THE news that planning permission for University of Cumbria’s flagship Carlisle Citadels campus project has been approved has largely been met with approval by our readers - with only a few dissenting voices.
The Carlisle City Council’s Development Control committee approved the plans which include the retention of the two Grade-I listed Citadel rotundas on the site along with other historic and heritage features, including the Woolworth and Burton’s buildings.
One reader, Neil C said: "Excellent news, stunning CGIs and hopefully good news for city centre retailers, who could really use the additional footfall."
Another, Nigel, appeared happy over the decision: "Amazing news for the city."
Facebook user Jonathan Hammond said: "I'm impressed. From what I can see here, the exisiting historic buildings will be retained and put to very good use.
"This should secure the futures of these properties for a very long time to come."
However, another user Alf disagreed on how helpful it will be for the city's retailers saying:
"Students? Maybe good news for the pubs and clubs on Botchergate, not sure about the city centre retailers."
And another user shared their doubts, saying: "Thinks it's great news for the city, can only make Carlisle are more inviting to visit.
"My one concern is how much local business will actually be working on this project, surely its needs to be the majority on a project this size?"
