DAMAGE has been caused to a canal walk in Kendal, according to police.

South Lakes Police reported that signs along Sedgwick canal have been damaged, with some even pulled out from the ground.

Officers said the damage was costing the parish ‘a lot of money’.

“In its 125 year life span the canal brought prosperity to Kendal,” said a spokesman from South Lakes Police.

“Carrying coal north and limestone south, it had trouble with leakage and was dewatered in 1955. In April 1980 it was bought by the parish council for £120 and residents lovingly restored it and transformed it, into a nature conservation area.

“Unfortunately, in recent months, damage has been caused to No Cycling signs, costing the parish a lot of money.

“In a place of beauty, I notice signs pulled out of the ground exposing the concrete. The path is only suitable for a person to walk, and walkers would be in some danger of falling down into the canal space if they were to try and avoid cyclists.

“Fortunately, there is a nice road for cyclist adjacent to the foot path. I witnessed many elderly walkers enjoying the path on the day I visited. It’s a shame that someone is setting out to cause criminal damage in the area.”
