ONE of the most popular craft shops in Bowness-on-Windermere has been recognised for its reputation as an amazing tourist attraction.

The Blackwell House crafts shop was shortlisted for the prestigious Best Small Tourist Attraction for the year, and hopes are high that the Blackwell will claim the award.

It was architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott's greatest house and built as a Lake District rural holiday retreat for the Manchester brewery owner, Sir Edward Holt.

It is well known today as an outstanding example of an Arts & Crafts house who provide workshops and services for families and tourists.

On July 24, the crafts business announced it had been named as one of the finalists for 'Best Small Tourist Attraction', put on by the Cumbria Life Readers' Choice Awards 2022.

Blackwell expressed its gratitude for all those who supported them in the award and who voted for them to get so far.

Helen Stalker, Senior Producer (Collections) at Lakeland Arts said: "We're absolutely delighted Blackwell has been shortlisted for the Best Small Tourist Attraction for 2022.

"A hidden gem and fine example of Arts and Crafts architecture, Blackwell is filled to the brim with beautiful furniture, textiles and furnishings by the leading Arts and Crafts studios and designers of the era.

"Blackwell perfectly encapsulates the Arts and Crafts movement's connection between the skill of handmade craft and the natural landscape and continues to engage contemporary artists and makers in exhibitions and commissions.

With stunning views of Windermere and surrounding fells, a unique contemporary craft shop, welcoming staff, tea room and terrace, we’re thrilled that this idyllic spot has been highlighted by visitors.

"The team at Lakeland Arts have worked hard throughout the pandemic to ensure Blackwell has remained safely open as often as possible - this is a nod to their dedication to keeping this special place available for people to enjoy."

Blackwell wrote on social media: "We're finalists in the Cumbria Life Readers' Choice Awards 2022 in the category of Best Small Tourist Attraction, and you can help us be featured in the next edition of Cumbria Life magazine as the winners for this category, by voting for us."
