FOUR drivers who were caught by police racing each other along the A65 are among the thousands of motorists who have been prosecuted as part of a special safety operation.

The foursome, who were recorded travelling at speeds up to 102mph down Settle Bypass, were charged along with 4,000 other motorists during a three month operation across North Yorkshire.

But despite hailing the operation a success, officers said they were dismayed at the high incidences of dangerous and reckless driving recorded - as well as the number of motorists who disregarded seat-belt, speed and vehicle number plate laws.

A third operation, Operation Anvil, will start before Easter.
