CARNFORTH Station is to play its part in the national celebrations to mark the centenary of the birth of the distinguished British film director Sir David Lean.

The station was the location for one of the great man's most famous and best-loved films, Brief Encounter, made in 1945.

Its world-famous refreshment room is still one of the region's most visited tourist destinations.

Sheila Ashcroft, visitor centre manager at the station, revealed she has secured funding from the David Lean Foundation to help stage the tribute to Sir David.

From March 22 to March 29, there will be a series of screening so some of his most memorable films, including Brief Encounter and Dr Zhivago.

The station will be teaming up with Lancaster's Folly and the Dukes Theatre to screen the classics and there will also be a chance to see the stage play, Noel Coward's Still Life, which inspired Brief Encounter, at Lancaster's After Dark Theatre.
