THE Liberal Democrats have recorded a resounding victory in the local district council elections.

Voters gave a resounding backing to the party, with 36 of the 51 available seats being taken.

The Conservatives were a distant second with 14 seats, while Labour came third with one seat. The Green party have no seats, after candidate Enda Farrell lost Kendal Far Cross.

Speaking on behalf of the Liberal Democrats, South Lakeland District Council leader, Brendan Jameson, who retained his seat at Kendal Park, said: "All 51 seats were up for grabs so logistically it was very demanding, but I think we have proved to the people of South Lakeland that we have delivered over the past two years, and we have been given the mandate to continue doing that."
