A FORMER fire station is set to be transformed into a funeral directors after planning permission was approved.

A proposal was submitted to South Lakeland District Council last year to convert the former fire station at The Ellers in Ulverston into a funeral directors and memorial chapel.

The old fire station was sold at auction for £327,000 last year.

Ten bidders joined the fight for the vacant emergency services premises, which was sold by Landwood Property Auctions in April.

Four months later, planning permission was submitted to convert the vacant property into a funeral directors.

According to the plans, the funeral directors would include a chapel, memorial chapel, reception area, waiting room, cold store, prep room, office, lobby and waiting area.

The proposal has since been approved by SLDC.

Plans were submitted in summer 2021 to demolish the training tower on the old fire station site which had been part of the town’s skyline for nearly 50 years.

The planning application stated that the training tower is 'now obsolete with no future use and in disrepair' due to trespassers.

The firefighters' base in Ulverston is now at the state-of-the-art Blue Light Hub.
