FLAGS are flying high from the top of a number of important buildings in commemoration of Merchant Navy Day.
Westmorland and Furness Council are 'proudly' displaying the Red Ensign at Barrow, Kendal and Penrith Town Halls today (Tuesday).
Merchant Navy Day is marked annually on September 3, the anniversary of the start of the Second World War.
The flag is also flying at Ferry Nab in Windermere.
On this day in 1939, just hours after the outbreak of the Second World War, the merchant vessel SS Athenia became the first major British maritime casualty.
In a post on social media, Westmorland and Furness Council said: "Today, we honour the brave men and women who were our nation's lifeline during both World Wars and celebrate the invaluable contributions of modern-day merchant seafarers."
