A 13-YEAR-OLD said he was 'overjoyed' after becoming the World Champion in the under-15s category of a traditional Cumbrian wrestling competition.
John-Lukas Stainton, from Dent, is a Cumberland Westmorland wrestler. He competed in the Under-15s eight stone World Championships at Loweswater Show on Sunday 1 September.
John made it to the finals on three previous occasions but this is the first time he took home the trophy.
He bested his competition in four rounds on his path to victory.
In terms of the fight, he said: "You get yourself into it." He trains every weekend for competitions and has been wrestling since he was two. John said he is inspired by his family. His brother, Myles Stainton, won the under-18 World Championship at Northumberland County Show earlier this year.
Cumberland and Westmorland style wrestling is popular in agricultural shows and sports meetings in the north of England and the Scottish border.
Other than kicking, wrestlers are allowed to use any 'legitimate' means to throw each other, according to the rules.
John's mother Glenis Hodgson-Stainton said the sport is becoming more popular with young people.
"They've got a lot of young ones at the moment - under 10s, under 12s. There's a lot of them," she said.
