A CURIOSITY shop crammed full with bric-a-brac is marking 30 years of trading.

The Nutshell shop, at Kirkland, Kendal, is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of second-hand treasures, from jewellery, bottles, pots and pans, to postcards, pictures and DVDs.

Margaret McCaffrey started trading, with her husband, Peter, a former teacher at Ghyllside School, from a smaller shop, but moved to the present premises next door shortly afterwards after buying it at auction.

“We sell everything from the weird and wonderful to the very useful,” she said.

The couple initially sold household items but switched to bric-a-brac when they could not compete with the advent of cheap imported goods.

Set on three levels, the property dates back to early Georgian times and still features the original fireplace and oven in the upstairs showroom.
