The next Short Film Night is on Thursday 5th February, 7:30pm and the special guest for the evening is local filmmaker, Kate Whiteside.

Kate will be screening her local documentary 'Digging in the Duddon'.

When Kate Harrison Whiteside heard from her writer-friend Aly Purssell that she was volunteering on an archaeological dig in the Duddon Valley, where they both live, all she could think about was filming it. ʻDigging in the Duddonʼ was a collaboration with local writer, neighbour and friend Aly, and the team behind the Seathwaite Tarn dig. It captures the story of volunteer archaeological diggers battling the elements, and a tight timeline, to unearth some Bronze Age history about the Duddon Valley. “I had never been involved in an archaeological dig, and it had a romantic, adventuresome feel to it,”

said Kate. “Also, after tramping through the valley for several years, I thought it would be interesting to see what was going on below the surface!” The project was part of the bigger Ring Cairns to Reservoirs programme, which involved the Lake District National Park Authority, Duddon Valley Local History Group, Oxford Archaeology North and Durham University students. With Harter Fell in the background, the participantsʼ energy filling the air, and with Aly weaving a story about Press Release their experiences. Digging in the Duddon, like its subject, is just a little piece of history.

Kate will be taking part in a Q & A with the audience after the screening.
