A RARE and elusive bird has been released back into the wild in Silverdale today following its discovery in Lancashire last month.

The black and gold-coloured bittern was found in an emaciated state by a member of the public in Bamber Bridge.

A few years ago there were only eleven male bitterns in the country. That number has since been boosted to 75.

Today delighted bird watchers and wildlife experts watched as the bird was released into the reed beds at RSPB Leighton Moss.
