CUMBRIA County Council is to axe 14 senior staff and scrap performance-related pay for managers in order to make 'substantial' savings.
The jobs of 33 Heads of Service are affected by the proposed senior management restructure, which is subject to a 30 day consultation.
The authority claims the new structure will help ‘drive the organisation forward in the challenging times’ and deliver benefits to Cumbrian taxpayers.
It is not yet known how much money the move will save. In January 2008 the council scrapped two of its eight corporate directors - who stand one tier above Heads of Service - and removed performance-related pay to save more than £200,000 a year.
The results of the consultation are expected in November and the restructure is expected to take effect in February.
Jill Stannard, acting chief executive of CCC, said: “This has been a difficult process because many of the people involved have worked hard for the county for a long time. But we have taken a great deal of time and care to propose the right structure for a new senior management team.
“We can't afford to stand still as an organisation and the whole of the public sector has to face up to the stark reality of the UK’s financial position. We will be expected to deliver more services for less money. We are currently looking ahead and planning our budgets for the next three years and need to make savings with the least possible impact on the frontline services that really matter to people.”
