A JUNCTION on the A65 where a popular cyclist died a year ago could be made safer for people on bikes.
Settle man Stuart Holdsworth was killed on October 2, 2008 after he pulled out onto the busy highway into the path of a car and caravan.
Now highways bosses from North Yorkshire County Council want to make improvements to the road at the junction with Giggleswick and Rathmell - although it could be a year before funding is approved.
Among the changes proposed is a ‘cycle island’ and a Tarmac path which would be laid adjacent to the road and be reserved for people on two wheels.
Councillors and highways officials have already met at the crash site along with members of the Settle-based World-Wide Wheelers - a cycling club of which Mr Holdsworth was secretary.
The cash to pay for the changes could come from the leftovers of a pot of money worth £230,000 which was set aside by NYCC for the Settle Service Centre Transportation Strategy.
Police are also considering introducing a 50mph speed restriction on a stretch of the Settle Bypass to cut down on overtaking.
