AN ANNUAL health check on NHS Cumbria has found it is improving.

The Care Quality Commission awarded the county’s primary care trust a ‘fair’ rating for its quality of services and a ‘good’ rating for its use of resources - last year the trust was rated ‘fair’ in both categories.

Over the past 12 months the trust has developed more health services, closer to home, with GP assessment services being introduced to the county’s four actue hospitals and community nursing teams upping the services they offer.

Among the strengths highlighted by the CQC were the positive feedback from patients, diabetes services and reductions in cancer deaths.

The watchdog also identified several areas for improvement, including better record-keeping of staff who have undergone safeguarding training and the recording of patients' ethnicity.

Trust chair Maggie Chadwick said: "This is a terrific achievement. There is no complacency about the work still to do and between now and next year everyone at NHS Cumbria will be will be working even harder to speed up the pace of change."
