THESE photographs of Clarence Webb’s Kendal garden centre and his bustling Highgate shop stirred up memories for one reader - but do you recognise anyone in the pictures?

Sheena Hayton, of Archers Meadow, Kendal, found the sepia images following the death of her step-father, Thomas Sharpe, in 2002.

Mr Sharpe worked for Webbs - at both the town centre and Burneside Road sites - all his working life.

The photographs date back to the late 1930s, when one of the two centres occupied Library Road. Men and women can be seen tending the blooms in what is now the car park of Marks and Spencer.

“My step-father loved his job but it’s funny, he wasn’t a keen gardner at home,” recalled Mrs Hayton. “He used to bring my mother flowers home, especially dahlias which she loved. Some of them were as big as your head! They grew a lot of roses at Webbs too.

“I remember the shop being busy. My step-father used to take me there as a little girl, and would buy me grapes as a treat. At Christmas we’d go and buy dates.

“I’ve kept these pictures since he died and have always wanted to know a bit more about them. I love looking at old photographs of Kendal and I hope they evoke some memories.”
