FIRST-aiders at two hotels have been given heart defibrillators and trained to use them.

Hotel chain English Lakes Hotels has invested in the equipment at the Low Wood Leisure Club at the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere, and the Sandpiper Leisure Club at the Lancaster House Hotel, Lancaster.

The equipment gives specially trained staff the opportunity to do something which may save a life before an ambulance arrives.

Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone at any age and often without warning.

In the majority of cases it means that the heart loses its normal rhythm and fails to pump blood around the body.

The only treatment is through an electric shock through the heart using a defibrillator.

First-aid responders at both hotels are trained to use the kit, which provides a voice prompt, which can guide the use through the procedures and alert the user when and if defibrillation is required.

It is approved for both adults and children and uses biphasic technology to give a low energy 150-joule shock.
