CAR thieves went on a spree, attacking at least five cars in the Ambleside area before eventually stealing one.

The culprits smashed the quarter-light window on a Rover 213 parked on Lake Road, and tampered with the steering column sometime between 9.30pm on September 27, and the following morning.

During the same period, a Ford Orion was attacked in similar style at Rydal Road and another Orion was attacked at Waterhead.

A Ford Escort was also targeted in the car park at the Ambleside campus of St Martin's College.

Again the thieves tried and failed to steal the car but stole two Pod rucksacks of climbing gear and men's clothes worth £200.

Eventually the thieves stole a Vauxhall Corsa worth £1,000 from North Road, Ambleside.

The turquoise car, registration number K730 EWG, was stolen sometime between 2am and 3.30pm on September 28.

Mike Smith, of Cumbria police, said officers were considering whether the incidents were linked.

He advised motorists to avoid leaving valuables in their cars and to avoid parking in isolated areas.
