BED and breakfast owners say night-time noise from a Lakes village pub is keeping their guests awake.

Coun Anne Sowerbutts told Lakes Parish Council that noise from The Sportsman, Compston Road, Ambleside, was "horrific" at night.

"They turned the music up to attract people in, but it is odious to people who don't wish to have the music," she said.

Coun Sowerbutts said "all the B&Bs" on Compston Road had "grumbled" to her about their guests being woken up "consistently at 12 and one o'clock" when The Sportsman closed.

Police constable Alan Clayton said he had spoken to the licensee, who had called out the police "on very, very few occasions for trouble".

"We've never had any great problems with The Sportsman," PC Clayton told parish councillors.

PC Allison Westmorland said noise was an environmental health issue, and police could do little about it.

District councillor Bob Barker said: "If people do not report their concerns to the right source it cannot be taken into consideration when a licence is applied for."

Coun Elizabeth Braithwaite said anybody with a noise problem should contact the environmental health department at South Lakeland District Council.

The Sportsman's licensee did not wish to comment when contacted by The Westmorland Gazette.
