The South Lakes continues to attract some excellent stand-up comedians and Barrow recently saw one of the best.

Many of you may know Milton Jones from his eight radio series on Radio 4 or from his appearances on Mock The Week.

I've been a fan for several years and was curious to see how his surreal act would translate to a full evening.

The answer is - extraordinarily well.

Milton Jones's performance is a thing of fragile beauty. Naive, quirky one-liners tumble out in a series of observations which are almost child-like in their innocence.

He rarely has to complete them, relying on the intelligence of the audience to finish the thought: "The Chinese language began as English. One person in England whispered it to another, by the time it got to China…"

He's playful with it, manipulating the audience and then delivering something unexpected.

His one-to-one interactions with audience members kept entirely in character. And not a swear word in the set. You have no idea what a refreshing change that is. The act is completely family-friendly.

One small caveat about the evening: the locals should try not drinking before the show. The number of bods wandering in and out was distracting and rude, especially during the support act.

Maybe Forum 28 could have a policy of people staying out if they leave during the act.

That apart, it was a terrific evening. There was splendid support from Danny Pensive and one of Milton's many grandfathers.

Barrow was the fifth night of an 80-date tour of the UK, half of which is already sold out. I strongly recommend you catch him if you can.
