A GRANGE-over-Sands couple received the ultimate Christmas gift when they scooped £1 million in a EuroMillions draw.

Karen and Anthony Shaw bought their winning lottery ticket from Kendal's ASDA supermarket two days before Christmas but decided to wait until December 25 to open it.

And at 4pm on Christmas Day all their festive wishes came true.

Mrs Shaw, 44, said: "We bought four tickets and put them under the Christmas tree to open as a family as presents. When we unwrapped them we had one with the right numbers on and we couldn't believe it.

She added: "My son said 'Mum, you'd better look at this' and we checked the numbers on his mobile phone, and then the laptop to double check and then it wasn't until yesterday when a Camelot official rang to confirm the money that it really sank in. It's incredible."

Celebrating with a Champagne reception at Kendal's Castle Green Hotel, the care home manager said the money will now be split four ways between the couple and their two children Sara, 22, a children's play worker at Grange Primary School and Karl, 20, a painter and decorator.

An Alaskan cruise is in the pipeline for the lucky couple but they will save the rest for their pension.

"We're going to see whales, glaciers...we can't wait but the rest we will use for financial security and to set up our children with their own homes," said Mrs Shaw.

The couple said they have been playing the EuroMillions and National Lottery for years but the most they had ever won was £47.

They are now one of 50 winners in the UK who received £1 million in a special EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle draw which took place on December 23.

Still stunned from their giant win, Mr and Mrs Shaw believe their good fortune won't truely sink in until the New Year.

Mr Shaw, a 43-year-old joiner, said: "It's just incredible news, you never think this is going to happen to you. All our family and friends are delighted for us."
