FEARS that Ulverston’s housing allocation could lead to a ‘dangerous increase’ in traffic along the A590 and flooding has been raised by a town councillor.

Proposals for 1,193 homes include a site for 747 to the south of the town’s Croftlands estate, with a potential for 360 of these being built in the next 10 years.

Town councillor Brenda Marr said: “Look at the number of accidents on the A590 – it is already dangerous. If the people proposed to live in these new homes have to work in Lancaster or Kendal, there’s only that one road in and out.”

She added: “Wherever you build in Ulverston you are going to have problems with flooding, we are in a basin and there are a lot of underground becks and streams.”

Elsewhere in Ulverston, 48 homes are proposed at land north of Urswick Road, 50 at Stone Cross Mansion, 97 at West End Farm, 92 at West End Nursery, 18 at land north of Water Lane, 90 at South Lund Farm, 12 at Morecambe Road scrapyard, seven at Stockbridge Lane and 86 at Canal Head.

Changes following the public consulation include the abandoning of sites at Town View Road, which included 18 homes, and land north of Union Lane, which was earmarked for 44, and an increase in homes at Stone Cross Mansion.

Ulverston has also been selected by the council as a key employment location.

More than three hectares of land at Lightburn Road has been suggested as a business and science park while land and Low Mill Tannery and Canal Head have been allocated for business usage.
